The Nature of Leadership and Management
The Nature of Leadership and Management
Introduction:
This chapter starts with a common introduction and
definition for the Leadership and the Management. This leads to a discussion of
the nature of Leadership and management as a basis for an analysis
Introduction for Leadership:
Leadership is the process of influencing other to
understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the
process of facilitating individual and collective effort accomplish shared
objective. As well as leader mean inspiring people to achieve a desired result.
It involves developing and communicating a vision for the future, motivating
people and securing their engagement. As defined by Dixon (1994:214):
‘Leadership is no more than exercising such an influence upon other that they
tent to act in concert towards achieving goal which they might not have
achieved so readily had they been left to their own devices.’
Definitions for Leadership:
01 ''Leadership is the ability to get a person to
do what you want him to do, when you want it done, in a way you want it done,
because he wants to do it'' (Dwight D. Eisenhower in Galloway 1990, 87).
02 ''Leadership is doing the right thing'' (Warren
Bennis and Burt Nanus)
03 ''Leadership is mastering paradox and what they
stand for'' (Tom Peters)
04 ''Leadership is a reciprocal relationship
between those who choose to lead and those who decide to follow'' (Kouzes &
Posner 1993, 1)
05 ''Leadership is getting others to want to do
something you are convinced should be done'' (Vance Packard)
06 ''Leadership is mobilizing others towards a goal
shared by the leader and followers''
Introduction for Management:
Management is the attainment of organizational
goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing,
staffing, directing, and controlling organizational resources. Organizational
resource include men (human beings), money, machines and the materials. The
word ‘Management’ is derived from the Italian verb maneggiare, which means ‘to
handle a horse’ this definition as least states that to manage is to have
charge of or responsibility for something, but there is a clearly more to it
than that. Management has often been defined as ‘getting things done through
people’ but managers are also responsible for controlling, guiding the business
or organization.
Definitions for Management:
01 ''The use of the people and other resources to
accomplish objectives''
(Louis E Boone & David L Kurtz)
02 ''Management is the art of getting things done
through and with people in formally organized group''- (Koontz)
03 ''Management is the art of the knowing what you
want to do and in the best and cheapest way''- (F.W. Taylor)
04 ''Management is the accomplishment of result
through the effort of other people''- (Lawrence)

The Nature of Leadership and Management:
There has been much debates on how leadership
differs from Management. The problem is that leadership involves management and
management involve leadership so that it may be difficult to separate the two.
There is some consensus on the essential nature of both and the skilled
involved, as mentioned above, but there is more disagreement on which is the
most important.
